The health and safety of our students and staff are always the highest priority at the Marlboro Central Schools. Working closely with the Town of Marlborough Police Department and our volunteer Fire Departments - Marlborough, Milton and Middle Hope - we continue to conduct drills and training programs that teach our students and staff about emergencies and how to respond to those emergencies.
Each year our school practices twelve Evacuation Drills (fire drills), an Early Dismissal Drill, and a Sheltering Drill (for high winds, etc.). We also practice “Secure the Building” (lockdown drill) procedures with students and staff. These Standard Response Protocol procedures are designed to protect our students and staff in the event an intruder is in our building or other events when the people in the building could be in danger.
In addition, we provide our students with a variety of programs that teach about stranger safety, abduction prevention, bullying, cyberbullying, internet safety, drug and alcohol prevention, and healthy habits – spread of communicable diseases. At the high school level we offer our student drivers with programs such as; “Mock Drill” conducted prior to the prom and graduation which reenacts for students what an accident involving drunk driving might look like. Driving simulators provided by Stop DWI of Orange County and Looking-Out program also help our students experience first-hand how a person’s response time when driving impaired is impacted.
Over the past two years, the district has participant in 2 grant projects; Integration of Mental Health in School through Orange Ulster BOCES and the Ulster County Prevention Project. As a result of our participation we have been able to train and implement additional programs in drug and alcohol prevention, anti-bullying, and character education.

The Responsive Classroom is an approach to elementary teaching that emphasizes social, emotional, and academic growth in a strong and safe school community. The goal is to enable optimal student learning. Created by classroom teachers and backed by evidence from independent research, the Responsive Classroom approach is based on the premise that children learn best when they have both academic and social-emotional skills. The goals of Project Northland are to delay the age when young people begin drinking, reduce alcohol use among young people who have already tried drinking, and limit the number of alcohol-related problems of young people. Alcohol is the focus of the Project Northland program because it is the drug of choice of American teenagers and inflicts the most harm during this age period.
Class Action – High School Health Program
Class Action, is the high school component of project Northland, along with 6-8 grade, is awarded the highest recommendations from both the Center for Substance Abuse prevention and the Department of Education. The program divides teens into legal teams to prepare and present hypothetical civil cases in which someone has been harmed as a result of underage drinking.Olweus Bullying Prevention Program – Middle Schoolwww.olweus.org/public/index.page
This program is the most researched and best-known school-based bullying prevention program. The goals for the program are to reduce existing bullying/victim problems, prevent development of new cases of bullying and improve overall peer relations at the school.
The Safe School Ambassadors® (SSA) program empowers leaders from the diverse groups and cliques on campus and equips them with nonviolent communication and intervention skills to stop bullying and violence among their peers.
